LASIK Touch Up/LASIK Enhancement Surgery

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular, FDA-approved vision correction surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While LASIK eye surgery usually provides long-lasting results, some people may require a LASIK enhancement or touch-up procedure to achieve optimal vision.

Most people who undergo LASIK surgery will achieve 20/20 vision or better, but some may experience residual refractive errors, such as undercorrection or overcorrection, that affect their vision and require an adjustment. This is particularly true if your prescription is particularly high or you have significant astigmatism. Needing a touch up does not mean anything went wrong with your initial procedure.

LASIK touch-up procedures are typically performed 3 to 6 months after the initial surgery, allowing time for the eyes to heal and stabilize. However, some patients may need to wait up to a year before undergoing a touch-up procedure, depending on their individual circumstances. Changes in the eye’s anatomy due to aging or hormonal fluctuations can also affect vision and may require a touch-up procedure after several years.

LASIK Touch-Up Options

There are several options for LASIK touch-up procedures, including LASIK Enhancement and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). LASIK Enhancement is the most common touch-up procedure for LASIK patients, while PRK is typically used for patients who have thin corneas or who have already undergone LASIK enhancement and require further correction.

Few patients require LASIK touch ups, as most patients achieve satisfactory results with their initial LASIK procedure. In fact, an FDA study on the outcomes of Contoura® Vision LASIK eye surgery reported a success rate over 96%, with 30% of patients reporting seeing better after LASIK than they had previously with glasses or contact lenses.

For those who do require a LASIK touch-up, it’s essential to consult with an experienced LASIK surgeon to determine the best course of action. The surgeon will evaluate the patient’s individual circumstances, including their eye health, vision goals, and previous surgeries, to determine the most appropriate procedure.
